At POSITIONS Berlin 2018 we present the German conceptual artist Roland Stratmann in a solo show. His work with used (handwritten, franked and stamped) postcards, which he combines into complex tableaux and blends in with large—scale ink drawings and text quotes, has become a trademark. These revised postcards become subtle social panoramas, they are equally archives of personal memories and those belonging to the collective memory.

In addition to works from the series YouMe / Deutschlandbilder and TaxiDerma, we are also pleased to present the work K1 / Elvis for the first time. 220 postcards from the USA and Germany over 4 decades form the basis. This work belongs to the series Bilateral Relations, in which Stratmann directs the focus on interpersonal and intercultural relations. In K1 / Elvis he combines two iconic motifs that have become symbols of their generation: Elvis Presley, King of Rock'n'Roll and embodiment of the American Dream, is superimposed by the back view of an exposed figure group of the legendary West  Berlin Kommune 1. The combination of both motifs, together with the added text quotation, allows much space for interpretation and opens the view on current tendencies of the political daily business and thus also on the current irritations of bilateral relations.
